What is Tooth Exposure?

Tooth exposure uncovery is a common procedure where your team at Eddy Periodontics and Implant Dentistry uncovers a permanent tooth that has not naturally erupted. To free the tooth from being stuck underneath bone or impacted by the gum, we will create a small incision in which your tooth can erupt through. The most frequent and common need for tooth exposure occurs when your wisdom teeth fail to erupt because of crowding, or being at an angle, or overlapping with molars. It is also common for a youngster to have permanent teeth that fail to erupt and will require the need for tooth exposure uncovery.

Nothing but absolute perfection is acceptable at Eddy Periodontics and Implant Dentistry. The entire staff focuses on a warm, patient, and caring experience for your dental care. Every day, every appointment, every procedure, the team concentrates on earning and maintaining your trust. We are proud to collaborate with you and your family, and each team member participates in continuing education to always apply the recent innovative technological advancements in the dental industry. Common Causes of Impacted Teeth

An impacted tooth can occur from a variety of reasons, but the most common reasons include:

  • The tooth bud is abnormally positioned.
  • The root is deformed from a mineralization issue.
  • Loss of primary canine or prolonged retention.
  • The arch is too short, or the teeth are too big.
  • The tooth is fused to the jawbone.

Who Needs Tooth Exposure Uncovery?

A child whose permanent teeth are erupting but still lacks adequate space for a tooth to come in might need tooth exposure uncovery. It is essential also that all impacted teeth are given enough room to erupt to contribute to the harmony of a natural smile.

Wisdom teeth that are impacted are quite often removed, but any teeth at the front of the mouth or major molars need to be exposed to come in completely. Canine teeth will often become easily impacted if the neighboring teeth simply do not provide sufficient space to erupt. These teeth are vital for biting and chewing and should be saved if possible.

Eddy Periodontics and Implant Dentistry often find impacted canine teeth in the upper arch behind other teeth. The tooth partially erupts in the natural arch, but only the tip of the tooth is actually showing past the gum line. These canine teeth look so small when only the tip is showing, because the rest of the tooth is still buried under the gum.

Some Benefits of Tooth Exposure

To ensure the impacted teeth in yours or your child’s mouth are appropriately positioned, Eddy Periodontics and Implant Dentistry may recommend a tooth exposure uncovery. This procedure will quickly and easily shift the impacted tooth away from the restriction and allow us to reposition it into its proper position.

If you or your child have impacted canine teeth you will notice a dramatic change once these teeth are readjusted and realigned. Once uncovered and correctly aligned they will make a huge, positive, cosmetic difference. The facial structure specifically of your child will benefit because the canines provide support for the corners of the mouth and help with the area above the lips, keeping it plump and full.

Having any impacted teeth uncovered will have major benefits for your long-term dental health. When the bite pressure on the arches is not evenly distributed across all teeth, it will cause some teeth to be overloaded and wear down quicker. With simple tooth exposure uncovery the tooth will erupt fully, providing multiple benefits in the form of a complete and aligned arch, better biting and chewing functionality, and a more perfect occlusion or bite alignment.

The Tooth Exposure Uncovery Process

Eddy Periodontics and Implant Dentistry will first administer a local anesthetic to ensure there is no discomfort during your procedure. We will then expose the tooth surgically. The procedure will only take 25-45 minutes, depending on how impacted the tooth is. We simply create a small incision through the gummy tissue to expose the crown of the tooth, including any surrounding tissue as well. Any bone tissue obstructing the pathway of the tooth will be removed if necessary.

After the tooth is exposed through your gum, a small bracket is then attached to the tooth, like braces, and it will easily naturally erupt into proper alignment with the rest of the arch of teeth. The tooth eruption process should take about two to four months.

Post Procedure Aftercare

Following your tooth exposure uncovery, Eddy Periodontics and Implant Dentistry will schedule a follow-up visit to monitor the progress and make sure that the healing is progressing. It is normal to feel some soreness following this procedure. To help alleviate any discomfort, you can just take an over-the-counter pain-reliever. It is also best to purchase a soft bristle toothbrush and to be gentle during your brushing.

The most essential thing you can do following your procedure is to continue to practice your daily oral hygiene habits at home. Brush your teeth twice a day, for at least two minutes each time, and continue flossing regularly. It is also strongly recommended to schedule preventative checkups every six months with Eddy Periodontics and Implant Dentistry for regular teeth cleaning and preventative evaluations.

Bone Grafting

When teeth are extracted or oral cysts are removed, the underlying jawbone can deteriorate. This can result in a sunken facial appearance and make dental implant placement more difficult. A bone graft is a straightforward procedure that promotes the growth of new bone cells, helping to restore your oral health and prepare you for further treatments.
