Dentistry

With sedation dentistry, you can restore your smile and continue enjoying all of your favorite foods.

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is the application of a medication to help you relax during a dental procedure. It is sometimes called sleep dentistry, although that is not entirely accurate. With sedation dentistry, you will usually be awake.

The various levels of sedation dentistry include:

  • Minimal sedation - you are awake but calm and relaxed.
  • Moderate sedation - you may slur your words when speaking and might not remember much about the actual procedure.
  • Deep sedation - you are on the edge of consciousness, but we can still awaken you.

Experiencing a more invasive dental treatment like a root canal, extraction, or oral surgery can be stressful and create added anxiety. With sedation dentistry, when your treatment is completed and finished, you might not have any recollection of the time it took, any noise, or any discomfort you were expecting. Eddy Periodontics and Implant Dentistry is pleased to be able to offer you the option of comfortable, safe, and effective sedation dentistry. You will benefit from sedation dentistry if you deal with:

  • The fear, trepidation, or anxiety of being at the dentist.
  • A challenging time actually sitting still for extended periods of time.
  • A tough time both getting and staying numb from the local dental anesthetics.

It is a simple, straightforward, relaxing way to experience dentistry.

The Different Dental Sedation Levels

At Eddy Periodontics and Implant Dentistry, we can offer you a variety of dental sedation. Our comprehensive options include local anesthesia, nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and intravenous sedation. The solution for your anesthetic which will be best suited for you will be basically based on the intensity of the procedure you are undergoing. Usually, you will fall into one of three sedation type categories.

  • Mild Sedation- If your primary goal and objective is to relieve your anxiety, then mild sedation is the preferred choice. Mild sedation will not only decrease your anxiety level, but it will also minimize the level of discomfort associated with the procedure. In some cases, it might eliminate any and all pain entirely.
  • Medium Sedation- For procedures that are more intensive, medium sedation is often performed. When you have medium sedation, you are in an even deeper state of relaxation. Sometimes this method has the capacity to induce some mild amnesia. If you and your team choose this as your sedation option, you will not be driving yourself home after your procedure. It will be necessary for you to have someone able to take you home.
  • Heavy Sedation- For some procedures it will be necessary that you be in as deep a level of sedation as is possible. The justification for this level is that anything less would make the procedure more difficult to perform in a practical sense. This is referred to as heavy sedation. The experience for you is remarkably similar to a deep sleep. You most likely will experience amnesia and be unable to recall any events that happened during the procedure. It will also be necessary for someone to drive you home following your procedure.

The Types of Dental Sedation

There are a variety of methods employed at Eddy Periodontics and Implant Dentistry to administer sedation to you, which include:

  • Nitrous Oxide- Nitrous Oxide is the most commonly used and mildest administration of sedation. The administration process involves a simple mouthpiece that distributes nitrous oxide and puts you into a relaxed state. Nitrous oxide also tends to reduce both the anxiety and discomfort associated with the procedure.
  • Oral Sedation- Oral sedation is a more intense level of sedation. Oral sedation uses an anxiety medication to put you into a deep state of calm. This effect can last for several hours even after your procedure is finished. You will not be allowed to drive yourself home following your procedure.
  • IV Sedation- The most intense level of sedation dentistry is intravenous, or IV Sedation. During this application, you are put into a state of unconsciousness remarkably close to sleep for a longer period of time. You will also experience amnesia both before and after the procedure. Because of the intensity of the sedation effects, you are not allowed to drive following your procedure, and you need to plan to have someone available to drive you home.

Bone Grafting

When teeth are extracted or oral cysts are removed, the underlying jawbone can deteriorate. This can result in a sunken facial appearance and make dental implant placement more difficult. A bone graft is a straightforward procedure that promotes the growth of new bone cells, helping to restore your oral health and prepare you for further treatments.
