What is Scaling and Root Planing?
Gum disease, or periodontal disease, is an increasingly common and frequent inflammatory condition of the bone and gums surrounding the teeth. If left untreated, serious issues can develop, such as bleeding or swelling gums, or gums that begin to recede. Gum recession happens when the gum tissue that surrounds your teeth begins to pull away, resulting in exposure of more of your teeth or their roots. In addition to your teeth looking longer and sensitive, visible roots, other frequent symptoms of gum recession include increased inflammation, bleeding, tooth sensitivity, and halitosis. An increasing number of studies have proven that chronic inflammation of your gums can lead to systemic inflammation, which then increases your risk of developing serious health issues, like diabetes, dementia, rheumatoid arthritis, stroke, or heart disease.
One of the most effective and reliable methods for treating periodontitis is a simple scaling and root planing treatment, which involves our team using specialized tools to remove decay, calculus, and tartar that have accumulated both above and below your gum line. The process of removing plaque to the root line is referred to as scaling, and removal of tartar on the root is referred to as planing.

Our Highly Skilled & Compassionate Team
Our team, led by Dr. Nelson Eddy, a Diplomat of the American Board of Periodontology, and his son, Dr. Joseph Eddy, combines decades of experience with advanced training to provide exceptional care for every patient.
The Scaling and Root Planing Procedure
If found beneficial, a local anesthetic will be administered before your team at Eddy Periodontics and Implant Dentistry perform the scaling and root planing procedure. Once you are adequately numb, specialized dental instruments will be used to completely remove plaque and tartar build-up that have accumulated on the surfaces of your teeth. If necessary, an antimicrobial agent might be used beneath the gums to reduce the oral bacteria. This is the scaling segment of the procedure.
During the root planing phase of the procedure, we will decrease the cementum and dentin that consist of unwanted toxins, and microorganisms from the surface of the roots of the teeth. Once the roots have become smooth again, it will be far more difficult for any bacteria to attach, accumulate, and thrive in this area.
The Benefits of Scaling and Root Planing
There are a variety of benefits associated from a scaling and root planing procedure, including the following:
- Protects Your Teeth- Left unrestrained, periodontal disease will put you at a significant risk of developing deeper gum pockets that accumulate even more dangerous bacteria, which will accelerate the process and eventually result in tooth loss and jawbone deterioration.
- Prevents Disease- Bacteria that develops in periodontal infections can also travel through your bloodstream and will affect other areas of your body. There are numerous studies that have proven that periodontal disease can be linked to other health issues such as diabetes, lung infections, and heart disease.
- Improves Halitosis- Consistent bad breath is one of the most obvious signs that gum disease is present. After your scaling and root planing procedure, you will notice a significant improvement in reducing this symptom.
- Improved Aesthetic Appearance- Since the scaling and root planing procedure includes removing superficial stains that have accumulated on your teeth, you will enjoy a whiter, natural smile following the procedure.
Scaling and Root Planing Procedure Aftercare
Following your scaling and root planing procedure, our team may use antibiotics on your gum pockets to promote healing and to minimize any discomfort. We will also schedule a follow-up appointment to reassess the improvements with your pockets and ensure that you are healing properly. Aside from this follow-up, it will not be necessary to follow any specific aftercare instructions, although it is always important to remember the reason this procedure was needed in the first place. You must continue practicing good at-home, daily oral hygiene habits. Brush and floss twice daily, and schedule regular check-ups at Eddy Periodontics and Implant Dentistry to allow us to conduct professional cleanings, which will reduce any further risk of developing gingivitis or periodontitis. If you follow these preventative practices, you will enjoy a healthy smile for years to come.
Scaling & Root Planing Cost
The cost of scaling and root planing will depend on a number of factors, including your dental insurance plan, whether additional procedures are necessary, and the severity of your case.
At Eddy Periodontics and Implant Dentistry, we are committed to ensuring that price and cost is not a deterrent to you receiving the optimal dental health care you deserve. For this reason, we can offer several payment options regardless of what type of treatment you are having, which our staff will be happy to assist you with. Our office insurance coordinators work with other insurance companies to assist you with your claim.
For your convenience, Eddy Periodontics and Implant Dentistry will accept cash, check, debit, and credit cards (Mastercard, Visa, American Express, and Discover). We accept our patients as family and will always work with family members to achieve the best outcome for all parties.

Bone Grafting
When teeth are extracted or oral cysts are removed, the underlying jawbone can deteriorate. This can result in a sunken facial appearance and make dental implant placement more difficult. A bone graft is a straightforward procedure that promotes the growth of new bone cells, helping to restore your oral health and prepare you for further treatments.
