Ridge
Augmentation

With ridge augmentation, you can restore your smile and continue enjoying all of your favorite foods.

What is Ridge Augmentation?

A ridge augmentation entails placing a bone graft directly into the empty socket where a tooth's roots used to be. This treatment will help re-create the natural shape of the gums and jaw that have been lost after a tooth extraction. Ridge augmentation is applied to reestablish your jaw’s natural contour. After a tooth is extracted, the jawbone starts to weaken and deteriorate to the point of recession. The empty socket, no longer supported by the removed tooth, shrinks in height and width. An indentation in your gums or jawbone can develop. This happens because when your tooth is missing, your bite pressure is no longer exerted on the jawbone in that spot. The lack of pressure on the bone results in shrinkage of bone.

It is essential that you see Eddy Periodontics and Implant Dentistry soon after losing a tooth so that the jawbone atrophy can be stopped. If you hesitate and wait too long and the jawbone deteriorates, we may recommend ridge augmentation to halt and reverse the process.

Nothing but absolute perfection is acceptable at Eddy Periodontics and Implant Dentistry. The entire staff focuses on a warm, patient, and caring experience for your dental care. Every day, every appointment, every procedure, the team concentrates on earning and maintaining your trust. We are proud to collaborate with you and your family, and each team member participates in continuing education to always apply the recent innovative technological advancements in the dental industry. Whether it is a regular checkup exam or a procedure for Ridge Augmentation, simply call us at Rock Hill - (803) 324-8141 or Charlotte - (704) 275-3750, and schedule your appointment today. You can easily find us at 1144 India Hook Rd., #D, Rock Hill, SC, 29732 or 3111 Springbank Lane, Ste F, Charlotte, NC 28226.

The procedure is extremely beneficial for the insertion of dental implants. When the jawbone density is increased, this ensures the new implant has the stability to enhance a successful restoration. A ridge augmentation procedure may be necessary simply for aesthetic reasons, or it might be needed to hold implants in place after a tooth has been lost.

Are You a Candidate for a Ridge Augmentation?

Here are a few reasons to consider a ridge augmentation:

  • Missing teeth and the natural deterioration of your jawbone.
  • Gum disease that has caused some soft tissue to deteriorate.
  • Developmental limitations that did not allow enough gum or bone tissue to form in some areas.
  • Oral trauma, like a tooth that is impacted below gum tissue.
  • Wearing dentures can also deteriorate the jawbone and affect the gums in certain areas.

Why Does the Jawbone Atrophy?

Your jawbone begins to deteriorate and lose mass the second a tooth falls out. When there is a space missing in your arch, your bite pressure is not distributed evenly, leaving the jawbone unchallenged in that spot causing it to weaken. It is important for Eddy Periodontics and Implant Dentistry to replace a tooth before your jawbone deteriorates too much. A bone graft procedure can strengthen a jawbone around the missing tooth. The ridge augmentation will need some time to heal but when it is ready an implant can be placed and will remain stable in the jawbone.

Ridge Augmentation Procedure

During the ridge augmentation procedure, Eddy Periodontics and Implant Dentistry will place soft gum tissue or hard bone tissue into the area that needs to be restored. This surgical technique augments the bone or gum tissue of the section for both functional and cosmetic purposes.

After the jawbone gains more width or height the new dental implant will develop more stability in your jawbone. We might recommend the ridge augmentation procedure for your aesthetic concerns as well.

There are two kinds of ridge augmentation procedure: Either soft tissue or hard tissue.

If you are undertaking a soft tissue procedure, which is often done for aesthetic reasons, we will numb the area first before the procedure begins. Eddy Periodontics and Implant Dentistry will then make a small incision to expose the site. Next, we obtain a soft tissue graft from the roof of the mouth or another substitute for soft tissue, and then insert the graft. We will suture the area to begin the healing process.

If you are planning to have a dental implant placement, a hard tissue graft might be required. The area will be numbed before the procedure begins. Next, we will make an incision and lift the gum away to reveal the defected bone. The bone graft Eddy Periodontics and Implant Dentistry will use will be acquired from either another area within your mouth or from another source. Once the bone graft is in place, we will reposition your gum tissue and suture over the graft.

Recovering from Ridge Augmentation Surgery

Ridge augmentation will vary for everyone, but it could take months to totally recover from your procedure. Eddy Periodontics and Implant Dentistry will discuss with you your recovery plan.

After your ridge augmentation procedure, we will advise you to avoid hard foods. It is also a wise idea to avoid sipping through a straw or smoking. It is also possible for you to have trouble chewing and talking after your ridge augmentation procedure.

Once you have finished your recovery process, the best thing you can do is to continue to exercise good oral hygiene habits. Brush your teeth twice a day, for at least two minutes each time, and continue flossing regularly.

In addition to your at-home care habits, we will ask you to schedule consistent checkups every six months. During these routine checkups, we will conduct regular cleanings and monitor the overall state of your oral health, identifying issues before they develop.

Bone Grafting

When teeth are extracted or oral cysts are removed, the underlying jawbone can deteriorate. This can result in a sunken facial appearance and make dental implant placement more difficult. A bone graft is a straightforward procedure that promotes the growth of new bone cells, helping to restore your oral health and prepare you for further treatments.
