What is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease or gum disease is identified by three continuous escalating stages. The first phase of gum disease is called gingivitis, followed by a second stage, periodontitis. The final and most serious level of the disease is called advanced periodontitis. Diagnosing and treating any gum disease early and promptly can both stymie and reverse the progression of the disease.

Starting with the damaging bacteria, gum disease is a primary factor contributing to loose or even missing teeth among adults over the age of thirty-five and it can also be the cause of many other worrisome physical health conditions. The bacteria are found within the plaque and tartar deposits that naturally accumulate on the enamel of each tooth every day. They generate toxins which immediately harm your teeth, bone, ligaments, and then infect the gums. All these elements collectively keep each tooth in the proper location.

Nothing but absolute perfection is acceptable at Eddy Periodontics and Implant Dentistry. The entire staff focuses on a warm, patient, and caring experience for your dental care. Our Highly Skilled & Compassionate Team

Our team, led by Dr. Nelson Eddy, a Diplomat of the American Board of Periodontology, and his son, Dr. Joseph Eddy, combines decades of experience with advanced training to provide exceptional care for every patient.

Periodontal Therapy Options for Gum Disease

There are several surgical or non-surgical periodontal therapy options available that Eddy Periodontics and Implant Dentistry can effectively use to proactively combat the impact of gum disease, therefore reducing the possibility of any tooth loss, preventing the need for any tooth extractions, or reducing the need for any corrective dental bone grafts.

Common periodontal therapy procedures include the following:

  • Scaling and Root Planing- A deliberate procedure of the deep cleaning of your teeth that removes the plaque and tartar that has accumulated below the gum line. Scaling is the removal of plaque and calculus from the surface of each tooth, where root planing goes deeper to smooth out your teeth’s roots to remove persistent bacteria. This will speed up the healing process for the gum tissue by removing the final source of the infection.
  • Periodontal Laser Treatment- This treatment removes damaged and diseased gum tissue. You may want to pursue this option with Eddy Periodontics and Implant Dentistry because unlike traditional treatments, periodontal laser treatment results in less gum shrinkage and less discomfort.
  • Periodontal Plastic Surgery- A gum reshaping procedure that can be performed to enhance the aesthetic appearance of your gum tissue.
  • Dental Implants- The dental implant process starts with the necessary extraction of a damaged tooth, followed by an x-ray to identify if there is sufficient jawbone density to successfully support a dental implant. If you are a viable candidate, a tiny titanium post will be surgically inserted into your jawbone, which will function as an artificial root. After this has healed, the replacement crown or bridge will be placed on this post.

Do You Have Gum Disease and Would You Benefit from Periodontal Therapy?

You may require gum disease treatment if you have some minor inflammation or bleeding. If you have any loose teeth or deterioration of gum tissue you would certainly require treatment. When your team at Eddy Periodontics and Implant Dentistry identifies gum disease and we can address it early, you will have a high percentage of success in mitigating the harmful symptoms altogether. You might have bleeding gums or puffiness and consider it ordinary. Bleeding and other symptoms of gum disease are not normal and should be examined immediately.

  • Your gums are swollen, sensitive, or a darker red.
  • You have discomfort or even pain in your mouth.
  • Your gums are pulling away from your teeth.
  • You can see pus between your gums and teeth.
  • Your friends or family complain about your bad breath.
  • You have sores in your mouth.
  • You notice loose or separating teeth.
  • Your teeth no longer seem to fit together when you bite.

How Eddy Periodontics and Implant Dentistry Treats Periodontal Disease

Discovering your periodontal disease as soon as possible can be critical to mitigating the disease. To identify the extent of your gum disease, we use a precise tool to measure the gaps, or pockets, between your gum tissue and your teeth. If this recession has reached three millimeters in depth, it is a concern. X-rays will also assess the amount of bone tissue around each tooth to determine the stage of gum disease.

At Eddy Periodontics and Implant Dentistry we exercise specific advanced screenings to clarify the stage of your gum disease and will create a personalized plan for the correct procedure for your treatment. The early stage of periodontal disease is often addressed with a professional cleaning and an improved program for your at-home efforts. To treat the second stage of gum disease, we will need to introduce treatments in conjunction with antibiotics. The advanced stage of gum disease may be best managed through a surgical approach.

Follow Up Care

Maintaining a deliberate dental care routine at home is essential after we have addressed your periodontal disease. We will provide you with an effective plan to improve your at-home brushing and flossing habits to proactively safeguard your teeth and gums. We will provide you with thorough post-treatment tips to recover from your procedure. We also strongly recommend appointments for in-depth maintenance and preventative cleanings at least twice a year.

Bone Grafting

When teeth are extracted or oral cysts are removed, the underlying jawbone can deteriorate. This can result in a sunken facial appearance and make dental implant placement more difficult. A bone graft is a straightforward procedure that promotes the growth of new bone cells, helping to restore your oral health and prepare you for further treatments.
