What are Full Mouth Dental Implants?

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root most often made of titanium. It is surgically placed in your jawbone and an artificial crown, dental bridge or a denture is attached. With this artificial root for support your restoration options expand dramatically. You can choose from individual implants replacing each tooth, implant-supported bridges for several teeth or implant-supported overdentures for an entire arch.

Conventional dentures can be uncomfortable, inconvenient, and unstable. Dental implants are the gold standard for single tooth replacements but when it comes to several teeth, they can be expensive and more complicated. By combining the two different technologies it now yields an affordable solution for you and a restoration that delivers stability, comfort, and a longer life expectancy.

The Benefits of Full Mouth Dental Implants

An entire arch of dental implants will be expensive and time consuming. Full mouth dental implants offer a terrific compromise with numerous advantages.

  • Comfort- Full dental implants provide a more comfortable solution for missing teeth. They feature a removable overdenture that rests on a metal frame that snaps onto the dental implant. This is convenient for cleaning or replacing, especially if the majority or all your teeth have been removed and you require a restorative replacement. This implant system fits much better and feels more comfortable, thus enhancing the self-esteem needed for your natural smile. Traditional dentures will not fit well over time and become uncomfortable. When this does happen, it will result in ulcers or an overgrowth of gum tissue, making it more difficult for you to speak, eat, enjoy favorite foods, and get your proper nutrition.
  • Stability- Your dental implants are attached directly into your jawbone. As your jaw moves, so do your implants. That creates stability. Traditional dentures, for stability, usually use adhesive to fit securely and can easily become loose. Because the implants are securely attached to the jawbone, they are strong and stable. With your restoration attached to those implants it also delivers that stability, making it a great long-term solution for teeth replacement.
  • Better Bones- Dental implants are in a unique class all their own when it comes to bone and dental health. According to research and the American Academy of Periodontology, dentures will result in jawbone atrophy and your facial structure will collapse with a recessed jaw. The dental implants’ integration into your jawbone preserves not only the integrity of your jawbone density but also the aesthetics of your face and smile.
  • Easier Maintenance- Full mouth implants are durable, but not indestructible. The time and cost required is significant, so regular maintenance and overall good oral hygiene are extremely important. With proper brushing, flossing, regular dental exams with Eddy Periodontics and Implant Dentistry, your implants can last a lifetime.
  • Convenience- Temporary replacement teeth will be placed during the same appointment as the implants.
  • Cost- Since this treatment requires only four implants per arch, it is far more affordable than placing an entire row of implants.

The Full Mouth Dental Implant Process

The process begins with an extensive evaluation by your team at Eddy Periodontics and Implant Dentistry. We will review your complete medical history and the current condition of any remaining natural teeth, as well as your gums. We will also capture a number of images of your jawbone, either upper or lower, to identify and determine the integrity and density of your jaw structure. Now we can pinpoint the precise, most advantageous locations for the implants, or we may have to consider bone grafting prior to implant placement, to achieve the necessary bone mass. Once the optimal positions are identified for each implant the procedure begins with your team administering a local anesthetic to numb the soft tissue immediately around each implant location. Once the gum is sufficiently numb, we will create an exceedingly small incision and surgically place each tiny titanium post directly into your jawbone. We finish by suturing each site closed.

It will take a few months for the implant to grow, fuse, and integrate with the jawbone. During this healing period, if necessary, we will fit and provide you with a temporary appliance, whether it be a denture or a dental bridge. Once your healing is completed, we surgically open the soft gum tissue again to add an abutment or extension on top of the implant and then once again, the soft tissue is closed around this abutment. With only a week or two of healing you are now ready for your final permanent restoration. If it is the method of ball attachments on each post, or a bar attachment connecting the implants, either way we will work with a final appliance custom created at a dental lab. The appliance now securely snaps on to the stabilized posts or bar and you have a secure and stable restoration as you leave Eddy Periodontics and Implant Dentistry with a huge smile.

Bone Grafting

When teeth are extracted or oral cysts are removed, the underlying jawbone can deteriorate. This can result in a sunken facial appearance and make dental implant placement more difficult. A bone graft is a straightforward procedure that promotes the growth of new bone cells, helping to restore your oral health and prepare you for further treatments.
