Restore your smile

Dental
Implants

With dental implants, you can restore your smile and continue enjoying all of your favorite foods.

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are tiny titanium posts that perform as the natural tooth's anchoring roots. Dental implants are extraordinarily successful in replacing missing teeth by imitating nature as closely as possible.

Dental implants are designed to deliver a stable foundation for replacement teeth that look, feel, and function like your natural teeth. If you have missing teeth, you regain the ability to eat anything you wish and you can again smile with confidence, knowing that both your teeth appear natural and that your facial structure will be preserved. The implants are small titanium posts that are surgically placed where your teeth are missing. Your jawbone bonds and grows around the titanium, creating a secure foundation for any restoration. In addition, dental implants will help prevent further bone atrophy which occurs when teeth are missing.

Are You Candidate for Dental Implants?

osing a tooth can certainly be hurtful, not only because it impacts the perception of your smile, but also because it can easily lead to other issues that will affect your overall oral health. It is desirable to replace missing teeth with dental implants to prevent health consequences such as:

  • Jawbone atrophy affecting the integrity and density of the bone.
  • The natural drifting and shifting of the neighboring teeth into the gap.
  • An alteration in the bite and alignment because of shifting teeth.
  • Jaw joint problems.
  • An increased difficulty in chewing and speaking properly.
  • Increased stress on the remaining natural teeth.

The Benefits of Dental Implants

There are many benefits that come with dental implants. The most important benefit is one you cannot even see and that is the preservation of the natural integrity of your jaw. By filling in the gaps from the missing teeth, you will prevent other issues from developing. If left untreated, gaps will allow for the adjacent teeth to move, creating new gaps between other remaining teeth, and then changes in the bite pattern. Dental implants will also restore your overall aesthetic appearance, reinstating the self-confidence that comes with a healthy smile. Dental implants allow for the maintenance of normal oral hygiene habits such as brushing and flossing. Here are some benefits of dental implants:

  • Maintains the integrity of jawbone density following tooth loss.
  • Preserves the health of any adjacent teeth since there is no need for them to support a dental bridge.
  • Replaces loose-fitting dentures or bridges.
  • Will naturally distribute bite forces evenly throughout the mouth.
  • They both function and feel like natural teeth since the artificial root delivers pressure and temperature sensations.
  • Returns your talking and speaking ability to normal.
  • Maintains natural facial appearance by preventing sagging.

The Dental Implant Procedure

It usually takes several visits to Eddy Periodontics and Implant Dentistry and a few months to complete the dental implant restoration. The process begins with an evaluation when we determine if dental implants are the best restoration solution for you. We will focus on determining the extent of damage or decay your teeth have and if extractions are necessary. After this has been decided, we will perform an examination of your jawbone to confirm that the structural integrity is sufficient to support an implant.

If your jawbone is not strong enough, we will recommend a dental bone graft. Bone grafting has a high success rate and provides sufficient bone density to support a dental implant successfully. Here are the steps.

  • Planning stage: This is the most crucial step. A carefully crafted treatment plan can be the difference between success and failure. Sometimes it might require us to use specialized imaging to identify your bone condition and 3-D scanning to ensure precise implant placement.
  • Implant placement: Eddy Periodontics and Implant Dentistry will surgically place the dental implant in the exact spot to allow the bone to fuse with the implant.
  • Healing: The jawbone around the dental implant will integrate with the new titanium implant in a matter of a few months.
  • Temporary restoration: If your dental implant is in a visible area, we will place a temporary restoration for aesthetic reasons while the site heals.
  • Abutment placement: When healing is finished, the dental implant abutment or extension is added to connect the implant to the porcelain crown restoration.
  • Porcelain crown: After our dental lab creates the porcelain crown to exact specifications, we bond the crown to the abutment. That concludes the restoration.

Dental Implant Aftercare

The initial healing after your dental implant placement will take a few weeks, so it is beneficial to adhere to a diet of softer foods, and gradually introduce harder foods. As your discomfort subsides, you can gradually return to all normal eating habits.

Once your restoration is completely finished, it is important to continue to practice good oral hygiene habits and take diligent care of your dental implants. Maintaining consistent oral hygiene habits is essential to preventing any additional issues from developing. Brush twice daily for at least two minutes each time you brush. Continue regular flossing habits and consider adding an antimicrobial mouth rinse into your routine.

To complement these at-home habits, it is also important to continue scheduling checkups at Eddy Periodontics and Implant Dentistry. Visiting us twice a year will allow us to conduct regular cleanings and monitor the state of your oral health, practicing preventative dentistry.

Bone Grafting

When teeth are extracted or oral cysts are removed, the underlying jawbone can deteriorate. This can result in a sunken facial appearance and make dental implant placement more difficult. A bone graft is a straightforward procedure that promotes the growth of new bone cells, helping to restore your oral health and prepare you for further treatments.
