What is Crown Lengthening?
Crown lengthening is a remarkably simple surgical dental procedure to remove excessive gum tissue and sometimes even bone. This treatment will expose more of your natural tooth structure, and the treatment might be used for a variety of distinct reasons.
The crown lengthening procedure might be necessary for a few different situations. You could simply have too much gum tissue covering up your front teeth and need to have the gums adjusted to frame a nicer smile. Or we might find it necessary to remove some of the bone as well as gum tissue, which visually lengthens the tooth, so it looks more aesthetically pleasing when finished.
Nothing but absolute perfection is acceptable at Eddy Periodontics and Implant Dentistry. The entire staff focuses on a warm, patient, and caring experience for your dental care. Every day, every appointment, every procedure, the team concentrates on earning and maintaining your trust. Are You a Candidate for Crown Lengthening?
If you are unhappy with your smile, you could be a candidate for this procedure. Excessive gum tissue or an uneven gum line can negatively impact your perception of your smile. Your team at Eddy Periodontics and Implant Dentistry will reshape or contour your gum line to remove the excess gum tissue and visually increase the length of your teeth.
At first it seems like an aesthetic issue, but if you do have a gummy smile, you might have an underlying issue as well. A gummy smile can be the result of how your jawbone was initially developed. If your upper jawbone seems to bulge out more than normal, it can appear to give you a gummy smile. This is not something that can be initially prevented, and it can cause improper alignment and even affect your long-term health.
Another cause for a gummy smile occurring is if you have an overactive upper lip. The muscles connected with this part of your mouth may pull your upper lip higher than where it should normally go. While this does not necessarily mean you have a gummy smile, it can give the impression that you do. This can also be treated with a crown lengthening procedure.
What Is the Procedure for Crown Lengthening?
Our team at Eddy Periodontics and Implant Dentistry will first evaluate you to determine the actual extent of any excessive gum tissue. Either a digital or traditional form of an impression will be taken to help determine what is the best solution. An x-ray will also be taken so we can determine if there are any unhealthy bone or tooth roots that cannot be examined with the naked eye. This examination is necessary to confirm you are healthy and have a reasonable amount of healthy jawbone and tooth roots available prior to the treatment being performed. The best results come from our detailed, well-orchestrated plan.
The trained staff at Eddy Periodontics and Implant Dentistry now introduce you to the dental laser. This laser is pointed directly at the excess gum tissue to be removed. The laser beam does not produce any heat or vibration, resulting in a completely painless and extremely easy treatment. The laser offers you a second benefit in that it will also seal any and all blood vessels immediately resulting in less bleeding or swelling.
During your crown lengthening treatment, we remove the excessive gum, bone tissue, and reshape the gumline to expose more of your natural teeth. The crown lengthening procedure can be done in a matter of minutes.
The Crown Lengthening Healing Process
Full healing time is expected to be completed in just a few days if the area being treated is minimal. If there is more advanced treatment needed with more surface area, the healing will take longer. It is not necessary to adjust your activity level or change your diet to shorten the healing process. You will begin by eating softer foods and can return to work the day after your crown lengthening surgery. You will need to return for a follow-up visit 4 to 6 weeks after your procedure.
During your crown lengthening recovery, Eddy Periodontics and Implant Dentistry will provide you with complete instructions on how to pay attention to your gumline. Once the local anesthesia wears off, you might feel some discomfort and if necessary, we can prescribe you pain relievers, depending on the extent of your surgery.
Crown Lengthening Treatment Cost
Like most dental procedures, the final cost for your crown lengthening treatment will be determined by several contributing factors, such as the scope of your case, number of appointments needed, was there any anesthesia involved and how much, and what type of dental insurance plan you currently have. We can provide you with a more accurate estimate following your initial evaluation if beneficial.
Eddy Periodontics and Implant Dentistry does accept most dental insurance programs and policies and we will be happy to provide a pre-treatment estimate to your insurance plan so you can determine what will be covered. If you are not presently covered by an insurance plan or have concerns about the final cost, we will be happy to share other financial arrangements with you.

Bone Grafting
When teeth are extracted or oral cysts are removed, the underlying jawbone can deteriorate. This can result in a sunken facial appearance and make dental implant placement more difficult. A bone graft is a straightforward procedure that promotes the growth of new bone cells, helping to restore your oral health and prepare you for further treatments.
