With sinus lift, you can restore your smile and continue enjoying all of your favorite foods.

What is Sinus Lift?

A sinus augmentation or sinus lift is a common dental surgical procedure. When you lose a tooth, the vacant tooth socket collapses as it recovers, which leaves a toothless area. This collapse results in a loss in both height and width of the surrounding bone, which then makes it impossible to pursue a dental implant for a restoration.

A dental sinus lift corrects the area of your upper jaw in between your molars and premolars. It fills the area in your cheeks on both sides of your nose, between your jaw and the maxillary sinuses. Eddy Periodontics and Implant Dentistry will lift the sinus membrane to allow space for the bone.

Nothing but absolute perfection is acceptable at Eddy Periodontics and Implant Dentistry. The entire staff focuses on a warm, patient, and caring experience for your dental care. Every day, every appointment, every procedure, the team concentrates on earning and maintaining your trust. We are proud to collaborate with you and your family, and each team member participates in continuing education to always apply the recent innovative technological advancements in the dental industry. A sinus lift is a primary step of a specialized bone grafting procedure that will prepare your jaw for a dental implant when your sinuses are too close to your jawbone. By simply lifting your sinuses away from your jawbone, adequate space can be created for the bone to grow and increase in mass and density in order to support your new dental implant.

Our Highly Skilled & Compassionate Team

Our team, led by Dr. Nelson Eddy, a Diplomat of the American Board of Periodontology, and his son, Dr. Joseph Eddy, combines decades of experience with advanced training to provide exceptional care for every patient.

Are You a Candidate for a Sinus Lift Procedure?

A sinus lift might be necessary if you:

  • Are missing more than one tooth in the back of your arch.
  • Are missing a significant amount of bone in the back of your jaw.
  • Are missing some teeth as a result of a birth defect or health condition.
  • Are missing most of your maxillary, or upper jaw, teeth and require support for dental implants.

The Sinus Lift Procedure

Before the start of the actual procedure, Eddy Periodontics and Implant Dentistry will administer a local anesthetic to the specific immediate area. Once sufficiently numb, your jawbone is exposed by making small incisions in both the molar and premolar areas. Eddy Periodontics and Implant Dentistry then makes a small opening into your jawbone. This now allows us to access the membrane that lines your sinus. That membrane in the sinus is then literally lifted up. The space that is created with this movement can then be filled with a bone grafting material. Synthetic materials are often used that imitate bone qualities. Upon the completion of the placement of the bone grafting material, the opening is sutured closed, and the wound will naturally begin to heal. Over the next few months, the bone grafting material will be absorbed, bonded, integrated, and become part of your jawbone. Once this process is completed you now have a new sinus bone which will be capable of supporting stable dental implants.

The normal healing time for the sinus lift procedure is usually from four to nine months. After your healing is completed, the dental implant process can be initiated to surgically place the implants in your restored jawbone. The bone graft procedure has compensated for the bone that was lost, which in turn will allow for the placement of multiple dental implants.

What Bone Grafting Material is Used for a Sinus Lift?

Eddy Periodontics and Implant Dentistry will conduct a thorough examination which most likely will include x-rays or CT scans to determine the best treatment solutions for your particular situation. In some cases, we might use your own bone, harvested the graft from either within your mouth or another area of your body, such as your hip or below your knee. At other times we might determine it will be best to use synthetic materials. We might also include an advanced new bone grafting material that uses a special protein to promote bone growth. We can also use growth factors from your own blood to help accelerate your healing.

Post-Procedure Care

Post-operative care following your sinus lift with Eddy Periodontics and Implant Dentistry is extremely important to reduce any discomfort and avoid unnecessary complications, such as swelling or an infection. One of the most crucial common things to be aware of is to avoid blowing your nose for at least a month, or even longer if necessary. If possible, do everything you can to avoid sneezing as well. If you do suffer from allergies, Sudafed or a similar decongestant certainly can be helpful with normal sinus issues.

Other than those points, immediately after your sinus lift, you will want to be attentive and make sure the gauze pad that is placed over the area where the surgery took place is kept in its place and changed regularly until your bleeding stops. It is also essential for your natural healing to avoid brushing in the area or rinsing vigorously for some time after the surgery, as doing so can cause the bleeding to start up again. It is all right to begin brushing your teeth again the day after your surgery but be mindful and careful not to brush too hard and purchase a new soft toothbrush if you do not currently own one.

Bone Grafting

When teeth are extracted or oral cysts are removed, the underlying jawbone can deteriorate. This can result in a sunken facial appearance and make dental implant placement more difficult. A bone graft is a straightforward procedure that promotes the growth of new bone cells, helping to restore your oral health and prepare you for further treatments.
